Shanghai (3B): Bazaar at Yu Yuan Garden

June 15, 2010

YuYuan  Marketplace

The marketplace outside the YuYuan Gardens is basically a tourist trap with LOTS of bodies and let's face it, a lot of crap.... I used to go to the beach at the same place every year in Emerald Isle, NC (mental note--- go back!) and there were all these beach stores just full of CRAP... so they were dubbed... "The Insane Crap Palace"... this whole area puts the Insane Crap Palace to shame.

Weird to see older styles mixed in with all the new... coexisting in what seems like a parallel universe sometimes.

For example, there are all these cars, buses. motorbikes whizzing around and this lady just steps out in traffic with her jerry-rigged wooden cart on what looks likes wheelchair wheels.

Yup, that's a Dairy QUEEN right in the middle of the mayhem.

Strange to see a Papa John's Pizza place, KFC, McDonalds... interspersed not only in the big tourist areas but also on corners next to little bodegas where they sold knicknacks or snacks.

The whole time you see these buildings that have been up since the 1400s and off in the distance you see the Pearl Tower and just skyscrapers dominating the scene.

Another entrance to the markets. No cars? Really?

As you leave the gardens, you'll see the H&M and KFC in the background... oh yes, and Hagen Daas.
