As per the norm with our Lost chats, JJ went first:
the last one of the year. : ( what will we do with ourselves until January? i'll worry about that later... it's time to discuss.
if you haven't watched the finale yet, don't you dare read this!!!
i thought the finale was very good and with the exception of a few obviously crappy reshoots they had to insert, it was pretty intense.
first off, i do NOT think that Jin is dead. my reason: he never got a close up through the entire sequence of the helicopter / freighter / bomb imperilment. L O S T invariably makes a big deal out of it when people die, especially a long established character. the complete lack of focus they put on Jin's possible death leads me to believe he may have lived through the freighter's destruction. I think that the whole group of characters on the helicopter, especially Sun, totally believe he is dead, but i don't believe he is.
that leaves me with doing the math of who is truly left. Daniel Faraday and the group of survivors he was trying to ferry back to the freighter are totally MIA. did they make it back to the island at all? they never made it to the freighter. are they just lost at sea? no clue.
So that means that the only Ocean survivors potentially still alive and on the island are Locke, Sawyer, Claire, and possibly Jin. that's it. not very many at all for the O'6 to go to all that trouble to lie and cover up the location of the island. The rest are all others or people the others have taken. only Kate and Hurley really care about Sawyer, so that means the only one they are really lying for is Claire, since they all hate Locke by this point. i don't think i would have gone along with Jack on this whole need to lie business. i would have challenged him.... but whatever.
sadly, i don't have unlimited time to write this, so i'll touch on some big things and then we'll get on with it:
I loved that Desmond survived and that he and Penny are reunited! yeah!!! i was going to be so pissed is Desmond died in the helicopter crash (which i feared would happen since he was not O'6, but was with them... i figured both he and Lapidus were goners). thank goodness that didn't happen. but he and Penny were brought back together and save the show for me from being a total downer. sweet. I loved the island moving and how that went. very cool. i did kind of predict how the O'6 would see the island vanish and all that stuff, but it was still done in an extremely cool way. so did the island just vomit up Benry in the desert once it moves? wieeeerd.
XinhXan observed that Sun is aligning herself possibly with Widmore as perhaps Sayid was forced to with Benry. and now that Sayid has seen Penny in person and Des and her together, could he ever go through with killing her for Benry if she is truly the top mark on his list? i think Ben will have to do it himself, or perhaps Sayid will take Benry out to free them all from his crazy plans. Benry is such a worm! when he said "so" to the freighter's destruction, i laughed because it was so Benry, but my mind was running down all the Benry lies about how they aren't killers and look at how totally soulless he truly can be / is. sick little weasel. So there could be a Sun / Widmore vs Sayid / Benry conflict in our future. we shall see... will the O'6 then be fractured into camps as the whole of the Ocean survivors were at the beginning of the season? some working with Widmore, some with Ben, some wanting to find the island, some wanting nothing to do with it. it certainly appears that way.
Locke in the coffin: so at some point, the island purges Locke off of itself, too apparently. and Locke is using a phony name and visiting the O'6 telling them they have to go back and that horrible things happened once they left. very curious. how long is Locke off the island and paying these visits? at the end of Season 3, my gut told me it was Locke in the coffin, but i just couldn't believe the Locke would ever leave the island with the rest of them. well, now we know differently. and i am very intrigued by Benry telling Locke that he is sorry for making his life miserable. does Ben mean his WHOLE life? i think he does!
The expanded O'6 press conference in the first part didn't add too much, but they did reveal the three names of the other initial eight survivors in the cover story: Boone, Libby, and Charlie. i thought these were very interesting choices, considering these are three characters that the O'6 were all certain actually did perish as they saw them all die and so did we. three people who the know can't still be alive on the island. but apparently might be off of it. We've seen Charlie and Libby and now know that Hurley enjoys playing chess with Eko. too bad we didn't get to see him again. that would have really been cool...
so one thing i am totally frustrated about: not a single island mystery has been solved. i am starting to doubt the writer's can explain everything to my satisfaction in the two short seasons that remain for the show. will they cheat us X-Files style and half-explain things? i hope not! this season was all Oceanic Six and the only real answer we got was who was in the coffin. let's run 'em down and see if they explain these things by the time the show does end in two years:
1) origins of Dharma and how they found the island and some more explanation on what they were really doing
2) the numbers
3) the smoke monster
4) what is up with all the dead people walking around
5) the whispers
6) what is the island?
7) who the f is Jacob?
8) what the time lag business all about
9) the four-toed statue
10) the Black Rock
11) what face cream does Richard Alpert face use
12) the Dharma shark
13) polars bears in the desert (did that polar bear move the island last time?)
14) Walt is Special
15) Aaron
more? you guys add them....
few quick hits and i'm done: Claire in Kate's off-island dream says don't bring Aaron back. how come? she knows Kate will return or try to. interesting. Christian Shepard says Micheal "can go now." i bet Harold Perrinau is not happy he bothered to come back to the show at all with how they chose to use him this season. i would be pretty irritated. and finally i think Keamy should have lived. he was a really good villain. Xinh and i think he has a sort of Chistopher Walken thing going on.... and nice going with the Others letting Syid and Kate do all their dirty work on the merc squad while they shot from the treeline. creepy sneaky bastards.

L-O-S-T, Season 4, Episode 12 (May 15, 2008)
As always let's start with Doc Jensen's EW recap.
We didn't really have a talkback today for this one. JJ is busy, and the rest of us just sort of agreed that it was set up.
Frank mentioned that it had some fun load sentences ("You're one of two people responsible...", "nice speech"/"thanks, i've had a lot of practice", etc). Putting some chess pieces together for the final moves of the season and said his wife busted up laughing and had me rewind to rewatch the scene when Jack, after being told by Sawyer that Hurley is with Ben and Locke, says "Son of a bitch." The delivery was good because (1) we dont usually hear jack say that and (2) he was so excited to finally having things go his way (finding the helicopter, ready to leave) and then to hear that, he got so deflated.
Julie's favorites: "When have you ever been completely truthful" - Locke to Ben after Ben admitting not having been entirely truthful about the Orchid "You're not going to die alone" - Sawyer, chasing after Jack into the jungle to rescue Hurley
LOVED the numbers showing up in Hurley's car...we haven't seen the sneaky numbers in awhile (and did you catch that is was on day 108 that the Oceanic 6 found civilization?)
Also liked how Jack found out about Claire being his sister and the "Holy crap" look he gave Kate.

L-O-S-T Season 4, Episode 11, (May 8, 2008)

And, the Doc Jensen review for today's show is great...

the devil is in the details
this episode was a bit of a jip for me. i liked it, but wanted more CABIN FEVER! i felt we have been waiting all season to get into that cabin again, and when we did, eh. not much going on in there. but....
there were a myriad of very cool things happening otherwise:
the most interesting of these things for me was John Locke being visited by ageless Other, Richard Alpert. that was very cool. there at his birth, there to test him when he's a young child, sending him an invitation to Mittelos Bioscience (where Joooliet went for her interview with Richard last season), and then another visit from Matthew Abaddon when Locke became paralyzed. all of these incidents were telling him he was trying to be someone he was not. that the Man of Faith we have seen since the very beginning is a poser and is supposed to be a Man of Science. or perhaps a Man of Both. i thought this was the most fascinating bit of the episode, coming right after we see another Jack episode who tries constantly to be a Man of Science only, and his life is in total shambles all the time. are Jack and Locke living lives intended for the other? should Locke be a brilliant, resilient, scientist doctor -- not a hunter filled with faith to spare, but just enough to serve the island. and in turn should Jack be a warrior, guided in all his decisions by a higher power. his stubbornness and determination seem well suited for that role. hmmmm.
we see the decline of Benry here, accepting that the island has cast him off as the chosen one. i thought that was the case when Ben got his tumor in season 3 and really thought so when Jack's appendix burst and Rose said what she did about the island healing people, not making them sick. well, apparently is does both! the island does whatever is has to do to get these people to do whatever it wants. but seeing Benry sink into a sullen zombie wondering in the jungle, pining over how he had dreams too once was very Biblical. very King Saul rejected by God for his disobedience and replaced by King David. very Elijah replaced by Elisha. very "this guy lost his way, so now this other guy is going to have to step in." pretty cool. incidentally, if i remember right, King Saul says in the Bible that God no longer visits him anymore and goes to seek a medium to conjure up the spirit of Samuel the prophet to try and get instructions for his life one last time. Samuel tells him King David has replaced him, that God's spirit is now on David's life due to Saul's disobedience and arrogance. sound familiar?
seeing the Freighter descend into chaos was interesting. i am wondering if Sayid gets back to the island to try to shuttle groups of Losties back to the freighter in the finale... he'll get the O'6 back and then Locke will successfully get the island "moved" and he was told to do, thus preventing Sayid from being able to go back for the rest of them. the island will be gone, hidden anew from the world, and then the 6 will have to come up with their lie about the other Losties to spare the hearts of the other loved ones who will never see their survivor again. maybe....
the cabin had me very intrigued. i knew Claire would be there, but didn't like how she was acting all loopy. what's that about? has she had a sense of what's up with the island all along? not likely. but waaaaaaay back in season one when Jack sees his daddy on the island the first time and chases him (White Rabbit), Locke interrupts the pursuit to tell Jack he is meant to be the leader. i think Locke was wrong on this one. i think LOCKE was supposed to be the leader and Jack was supposed to follow daddy to the cabin and start his Man of Faith path. now Claire is on it, and obviously very comfortable with it, to be chillin' on the cabin sofa. Claire went off with white rabbit daddy and seems to have possibly found her purpose. was Jack supposed to do the same? as for Aaron: the "he's where he is supposed to be" line had XinhXan and i talking. i think Aaron is supposed to still be RAISED by Claire, but while the war between the insane mercs and the Losties blows up, he is supposed to be with Sawyer, because Sawyer is living up to all the things Jack is failing at right now: decisiveness, protection, courage, etc. perhaps Aaron will survive only because he has been left with Sawyer... and perhaps Kate and Sawyer and supposed to be together, not Kate and Jack (why Hurley says what he says to Jack in the looney bin from Charlie's message for him). or perhaps Aaron is never meant to leave the island, but the Losties will decide he should go with Sayid on the first boat ride back to the freighter. we shall see...
p.s. -- what are everyone's thoughts on Christian Shepard speaking for Jacob? interesting. and that he identified himself as "Christian," his real name when he was alive. is he resurrected? a vision? a ghost? hmmm.

L-O-S-T Season 4, Episode 10 (May 1, 2008)
Okay kiddies... first thing first... Doc Jensen's EW Article is always a good start.

I'll go first... no one else has seen it or sent emails yet. I think most of them are consumed with the tornadoes in MO last night so the networks didn't show LOST to them... poor kids.
So, I really liked Jack reading little Aaron the bit about Alice in Wonderland... where the world isn't quite right and fantastical things happen. Jack's comment that Kate wasn't related to Claire indicates that he possibly knows that he IS related to his NEPHEW Aaron.
Poor Hurley, he's bat-fucking crazy. "We're all dead." and "Someone is coming to visit you too, Jack" Really nice. Instead of someone coming to visit Jack, his Dad goes to visit Claire.... carrying her off into the night leaving Aaron all alone. Interested to see if Miles actually saw Jack's dad in the middle of night too.
Speaking of Claire... Sawyer IS being awfully big-brothery to her... running into an exploded building screaming CLAIRE! at the top of his lungs and then giving Miles the "restraining order" (my favorite part of the episode). The nice bit of irony is that time and time again we've seen the dreamy hunk Sawyer rise to the occasion of stepping into Jack's absent shoes... as leader, lover to Kate and now big-brother to Claire. Even off the island, Kate still is doing his bidding. The anti-Jack is actually very Jack... without the medical degree.
Hard to imagine that Jack's gone ahead and settled into a cushy boring doctor's life as an oncologist (?) when previously he was a surgeon... if he couldn't get a job in surgery, presumably because of his drug habit, it is hard to imagine his colleagues prescribing pain pills for him.
Lastly, I like Jin the bad-ass... threatening to break fingers... he'll resort to his old ways if it means helping Sun... which is sort of how he got into the enforcer business to begin with. I'm interested to see how that will play out.

L-O-S-T Season 4, Episode 9 (Apr. 24, 08)

As always, let's start with the Doc Jensen article.

JJ got us started this week:
good morning everyone...
well i thought last night's episode was fantastic. it felt like a whole new beginning for the show to me. a completely new direction taking hold with a projected fight for the island between Benry and Widmore. excellent.
when they began the flashforward concept at the end of season 3 and the beginning of this season, i really could not envision how they could make it play out for three more seasons. well now i can. last night's episode truly crammed a great deal in and from the beginning many things were not only hinted at, but things were being paid off right away...
First, i want to say that the end scene between Benry and Widmore was excellent. the dialogue was awesome, the acting was superb, the camera angles totally set the mood and when Benry woke Widmore up and addressed him by his first name as if they were old friends, i immediately thought of Magneto and Professor Xavier from the X-Men. Widmore and Prof X even sharing the same first name. "Wake up, Charles." then Widmore proceeds to tell Benry he sneaks into his bedroom in the middle of the night like a rat. oh, it was great. that was good stuff. those two actors together are perfect and could not have been better cast in a million years. i loved it. [Widmore stating that Benry "took everything that was his" has me wondering if Widmore actually was overseeing Dharma. That's maybe Benry's genocide of Dharma and resting control of the island by joining the others is what Widmore is referring to... maybe. could Widmore be a descendant of Hanso and feels the island is his birthright? maybe... ]
so, on top of that, we have lots to think about... so there is a new "trinity" if you will of Locke, Hurley and Ben in communicating with Jacob. very interesting. all three are needed to find him and receive instructions? that's not a surprise necessarily with how the first episode of the season went, but it is certainly curious and i can't wait to see how Hurley and Jacob will interact. it was cool to see a little bit of take-charge from Hurley in stopping Sawyer and Locke from blasting each other...
speaking of which, the duel conflicts of Sawyer's will vs Locke's will happening in this episode at the same time Benry and Widmore begin their all out war for possession of the island was genius. i love it when they parallel themes within the show through multiple characters. it was nicely done and not overly obvious. Benry said when the freighter mercs arrived that whatever they did would make the group angry to force a split and make them sell Benry out... well he was right and it worked, but not exactly as he said. Sawyer and the rest abandon Benry in the jungle, nearly killing Locke over it. the freighter mercs plan worked (except for them dying by smoke monster in the process!)... or was it Benry's plan all along (with the exception of Alex's death)?
the smoke monster sequence was amazing. it looked huge! far greater than anything we've seen up to now. so did Ben really "let it out?" does the smoke monster live under Benry's little cottage in the strange dungeon looking chamber? did Benry let it out to kill Eko in season 3, to take Locke in season 1? hmmmm.
and speaking of plotting and manipulating: XinhXan thinks that Benry set Sayid up to work for him all along. That the whole murdering of Nadia, and maybe even making sure they got married first, was all within Benry's evil devices to get Sayid to be his trigger man down the line. That wry smile of Benry's seems to prove her right. i'm not so sure though... i am starting to wonder if Benry is a moment to moment manipulator. that he does certainly have some overall grand plans to screw with everyone, but when things go wrong / or unexpectedly -- he is immediately able to use it to his advantage. Like the whole taking Sawyer, Kate and Jack captive plan was a long, well thought out scheme, but he constantly had to change it as things did not go as he planned. and he still got what he wanted... more island power wish-fulfillment at work, or is Ben just that good at f-ing with people?
the execution of Alex was obviously not Ben's plan, but the new tack in revenge for her murder with Penelope Widmore is truly unsettling. think about the potential story ramifications: in this ep we saw Benry recruit Sayid to be his hitter, and Sayid is eager to move up the list of people to off without a thought. well, you know now that the top name on the list isn't Charles at all or even Abaddon, but it's Penny. Well, we also just saw Sayid witness first hand Desmond and Penny be "reunited" by phone on the freighter after eight years. Sayid has seen the photo of Penny. and Sayid's greatest weakness is that he's a lover... hopelessly prone to falling for the ladies. will this become his most difficult inner confilct? to kill Penny, knowing that she is Desmond's love and potentially starting a whole new Magneto/Professor X -- Benry/Widmore war but between Sayid and Desmond? i can see this becoming the driving force of all the flashforward story... this war between Benry and Widmore bringing into conflict men who once were friends and causing right and wrong to no longer be black and white. you guys know that Des is my favorite character and if anything happens to Penny... dude, i will NOT be pleased. i will side with Widmore and Benry and the lot of them can go screw! incidently - Benry could have said anything he wanted about the photo of that bald dude. he may have had nothing to do with Nadia's death. just an old Benry trick to get Sayid in his grip. or not.
ok, enough. so we also got the foreshadowing dialogue at the onset as the boys played Risk (awesome by the way) that gave us some cool hints, but one line really got me: Hurley said, "Australia is the key to everything." very interesting. lines like that are always intentional. XinhXan honed in on Benry's line during the raid on the Barracks about the mercs tactics being to make them angry enough to turn Ben over and she was on the right track. i think this Australia line is one of those, but for the whole scope of the series. that perhaps to FIND the island, you must start in Australia... The Black Rock, the Nigerian Drug Plane might have stopped Down Under and then headed in that direction, and of course Flight 815. But perhaps the island's "time" connections are linked to specific points in the outside world that can get you to the island or off the island, as we saw Benry "appear" in the Sahara desert in good all orientation man's coat. we saw the Dharma polar bear fossils in Tunisia (which was Ben's first stop after killing those dudes in the desert (but Ben's "not a killer." uh-huh). so maybe you can get on / off the island via this spot in Tunisia and that's how Eko's plane got there? did it fly over that spot and then appear on the island? or could The Black Rock and Rousseou's team have sailed into a similar spot in the ocean that "transports" you to the island. maybe it isn't just about coordinates and "bearing" numbers, but specific places on the earth. and maybe one of those is in Australia. and if the Losties in the future and Benry or Widmore want to "find" the island agian, they will have to find that spot in Austalia first. who knows. i'm probably wrong.
Sawyer was a total badass, taking charge and saving Claire, then calling them as he sees them with Ben and Locke and whoever Jacob is...
and once again Jack was a total tool. why doesn't he ask any questions about what the hell is going on? Arrrghh!!! i would have been grilling Faraday and Charlotte on day one! what is his damage? (besides the daddy issues, lack of faith, alcoholism, obsessive behavior, control-freakiness, lack of commitment, and self-loathing)
one last thing and i'll quit: Benry asked the date at the Tunisian hotel and the lady told him October or something 2005. the plane crashed on 9/22/2004 and Desmond made it to the freighter to make his phone call on Christmas Eve 2004, so island time is right around New Year's 2005 right now... something to think about with Benry's flashforward... Sayid and Nadia could not have been married for very long at all.

JJ got us started this week:
good morning everyone...
well i thought last night's episode was fantastic. it felt like a whole new beginning for the show to me. a completely new direction taking hold with a projected fight for the island between Benry and Widmore. excellent.
when they began the flashforward concept at the end of season 3 and the beginning of this season, i really could not envision how they could make it play out for three more seasons. well now i can. last night's episode truly crammed a great deal in and from the beginning many things were not only hinted at, but things were being paid off right away...
First, i want to say that the end scene between Benry and Widmore was excellent. the dialogue was awesome, the acting was superb, the camera angles totally set the mood and when Benry woke Widmore up and addressed him by his first name as if they were old friends, i immediately thought of Magneto and Professor Xavier from the X-Men. Widmore and Prof X even sharing the same first name. "Wake up, Charles." then Widmore proceeds to tell Benry he sneaks into his bedroom in the middle of the night like a rat. oh, it was great. that was good stuff. those two actors together are perfect and could not have been better cast in a million years. i loved it. [Widmore stating that Benry "took everything that was his" has me wondering if Widmore actually was overseeing Dharma. That's maybe Benry's genocide of Dharma and resting control of the island by joining the others is what Widmore is referring to... maybe. could Widmore be a descendant of Hanso and feels the island is his birthright? maybe... ]
so, on top of that, we have lots to think about... so there is a new "trinity" if you will of Locke, Hurley and Ben in communicating with Jacob. very interesting. all three are needed to find him and receive instructions? that's not a surprise necessarily with how the first episode of the season went, but it is certainly curious and i can't wait to see how Hurley and Jacob will interact. it was cool to see a little bit of take-charge from Hurley in stopping Sawyer and Locke from blasting each other...
speaking of which, the duel conflicts of Sawyer's will vs Locke's will happening in this episode at the same time Benry and Widmore begin their all out war for possession of the island was genius. i love it when they parallel themes within the show through multiple characters. it was nicely done and not overly obvious. Benry said when the freighter mercs arrived that whatever they did would make the group angry to force a split and make them sell Benry out... well he was right and it worked, but not exactly as he said. Sawyer and the rest abandon Benry in the jungle, nearly killing Locke over it. the freighter mercs plan worked (except for them dying by smoke monster in the process!)... or was it Benry's plan all along (with the exception of Alex's death)?
the smoke monster sequence was amazing. it looked huge! far greater than anything we've seen up to now. so did Ben really "let it out?" does the smoke monster live under Benry's little cottage in the strange dungeon looking chamber? did Benry let it out to kill Eko in season 3, to take Locke in season 1? hmmmm.
and speaking of plotting and manipulating: XinhXan thinks that Benry set Sayid up to work for him all along. That the whole murdering of Nadia, and maybe even making sure they got married first, was all within Benry's evil devices to get Sayid to be his trigger man down the line. That wry smile of Benry's seems to prove her right. i'm not so sure though... i am starting to wonder if Benry is a moment to moment manipulator. that he does certainly have some overall grand plans to screw with everyone, but when things go wrong / or unexpectedly -- he is immediately able to use it to his advantage. Like the whole taking Sawyer, Kate and Jack captive plan was a long, well thought out scheme, but he constantly had to change it as things did not go as he planned. and he still got what he wanted... more island power wish-fulfillment at work, or is Ben just that good at f-ing with people?
the execution of Alex was obviously not Ben's plan, but the new tack in revenge for her murder with Penelope Widmore is truly unsettling. think about the potential story ramifications: in this ep we saw Benry recruit Sayid to be his hitter, and Sayid is eager to move up the list of people to off without a thought. well, you know now that the top name on the list isn't Charles at all or even Abaddon, but it's Penny. Well, we also just saw Sayid witness first hand Desmond and Penny be "reunited" by phone on the freighter after eight years. Sayid has seen the photo of Penny. and Sayid's greatest weakness is that he's a lover... hopelessly prone to falling for the ladies. will this become his most difficult inner confilct? to kill Penny, knowing that she is Desmond's love and potentially starting a whole new Magneto/Professor X -- Benry/Widmore war but between Sayid and Desmond? i can see this becoming the driving force of all the flashforward story... this war between Benry and Widmore bringing into conflict men who once were friends and causing right and wrong to no longer be black and white. you guys know that Des is my favorite character and if anything happens to Penny... dude, i will NOT be pleased. i will side with Widmore and Benry and the lot of them can go screw! incidently - Benry could have said anything he wanted about the photo of that bald dude. he may have had nothing to do with Nadia's death. just an old Benry trick to get Sayid in his grip. or not.
ok, enough. so we also got the foreshadowing dialogue at the onset as the boys played Risk (awesome by the way) that gave us some cool hints, but one line really got me: Hurley said, "Australia is the key to everything." very interesting. lines like that are always intentional. XinhXan honed in on Benry's line during the raid on the Barracks about the mercs tactics being to make them angry enough to turn Ben over and she was on the right track. i think this Australia line is one of those, but for the whole scope of the series. that perhaps to FIND the island, you must start in Australia... The Black Rock, the Nigerian Drug Plane might have stopped Down Under and then headed in that direction, and of course Flight 815. tonight's L O S T should be very exciting... i have noticed the last few weeks that the discussion has tapered off some since the totally awesome Desmond episode. hard to follow that one up really if you think about it. anyway, my office is closed tomorrow for Good Friday, so i wanted to send the email today with everyone's address... that way if tonight's L O S T is super incredible and everyone is dying to talk about it, then we'll already have started it with this one. hope everyone has a great Easter weekend.

L-O-S-T Season 4, Episode 7
Thanks Cyndi for scanning my pic... it was from when I was like 11 or 12 and used the tree to escape to read where my parents wouldn't think I was idle and give me chores or my sibs wouldn't be able to interrupt my reading...
